Eine Gattungsverwandte der Rötlichen Wurzeltrüffel Rhizopogon roseolus
wurde 1939, also 7 Jahre post mortem von Sanford Myron Zeller (1885-1948) als Rhizopogon thaxteri zu Roland Thaxters Ehren benannt.

Roland Thaxter (1858-1932) war ein amerikanische Mykologe. Er war Spezialist für die Laboulbeniales, deretwegen er den Prix Desmaziers erhielt. Er war gewähltes Mitglied zahlreicher internationaler Mykologischen Gesellschaften.
Thaxter studierte bei William Gilson Farlow Naturgeschichte an der Harvard Universität, wo er 1888 promovierte.
Er wurde dann Phytopathologe und beschrieb viele Pflanzenkrankheiten. Er entdeckte 1890 die Ursache des Kartoffelschorfes und war ein Pionier in der Einführung von Fungiziden.
